Acorn at Nanotech 2005!The World's most portable particle size analyzer was introduced at Nanotech 2005 in Anaheim on May 10. XiGo Nanotools introduced this revolutionary device and presented a paper describing its use called “A New, Simple, Inexpensive Method for Non-Invasive Particle Size Measurement of Suspensions and Droplets”<< back to top |

Why is Particle Sizing ImportantPowder technology is an important subject. The overwhelming majority of manufactured products involve suspensions of particulate materials -- either in the final state or at some stage of their production. A survey in 1990 of 3000 Dupont products revealed that 80% involved powder at some stage of their manufacture. The applications of powder science are far-reaching. The size of fine particles affects the properties of a powder in many important ways. The settling time of cement; the sagging and other flow characteristics of paints; the hiding power, hue, and tone of color pigments; the activity of chemical catalysts; the taste, texture, and mouth-feel of food; the potency of drugs<< back to top |

High Concentration Laser Diffraction Measurements with the SALD 2101When using laser diffraction methods for particle size distribution measurements, in order to avoid the effects of multiple scattering, measurements are conducted using low concentration (in the region of 100ppm). However, in some suspensions or emulsions, the dispersion condition may vary with dilution, making it difficult to achieve a stable measurement. The following measurements have been performed using the SALD-2101 high concentration sample measurement system on a fuel based W/O emulsion whose dispersion condition is unstable when diluted. This kind of emulsion is commonly used in fuels for internal combustion engines, foodstuffs and in pharmaceuticals...(Click here to read the full article) << back to top |

Closeup on Technology
Laser diffraction optics vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. This note helps explain how the patented optics for the Shimadzu SALD 7001 work to help you make more accurate measurements. AS particles get smaller, they scatter light to larger angles. Light entering the periphery of a lense can be distorted. Shimadzu has a patented solution to this problem, incorporated into its SALD 7001. This enables the measurement of scattered light up to an angle of 60 degrees. This enables Shimadzu to measure light diffracted from both small and large particles with a single light source (Click here for the full article) << back to top |

Dry Powder MeasurementsCharacterization of powders couldnt be easier with the Dry powder attachments from Shimadzu. There are several different powder handling methods depending on the sample size. The picture at left shows the hand held option in which a thumb activated switch controls the suction of the powder into the device. Data acquisition is controlled automatically, starting as the powder passes through the laser beam and ending when the powder shot has passed through the device. One of the benefits of dry powder analysis is that much larger quantities of sample may be analyzed than in traditional wet dispersion. A rotary turntable enables the user to measure several grams of sample in a single test, which allows the user to obtain results that are more representative of the bulk sample without the added hassle of repetitive sampling and testing. A vibratory feeder is also available to measure dry powders in free fall. << back to top |

Batch Cell MeasurementsFor samples dispersed in non aqueous media or small sample quantities, it makes sense to use the batch cell. An optically clear quartz 12 ml maximum volume cuvette is easily inserted an removed from the instrument. For sample that may settle during measurement, a reciprocating paddle stirrer can be used to keep your sample suspended. A polyacetal funnel can be used to fill the sample and a cover is available for volatile samples.<< back to top |
